Defining and Expectations

Every man is responsible for defining themselves.  We can choose to do this in so many ways.  We can allow societal norms to play a role, use the expectations of others, or use our own standards.  Whatever the case, we choose the person we will be – we choose to change that person if desired… and we choose to allow others a say in that definition.

So what happens when we want to live to the expectations of another?  We want to define ourselves as they wish us to be?  But we aren’t that person?  What happens if we believe that the person they want us to be is better than the person we are?  What happens if their expectations, that we choose to follow,  do not allow us to be the best person we can be?

This above all: to thine own self be true,/And it must follow, as the night the day,/Thou cans't not be false to any man "

Shakespeare, "Hamlet" (ll.78-80)

Methinks the Bard had it right.

Sounds like a conversation I just had with an Exceptional Lady...! :)

Brian, you hit the nail on the head. I have learned that the hard way--but most importantly, I have learned.

Be well, TE.
