Happy 4th of July

Ah, the 4th of July

Picnics, BBQ, fireworks, mosquitoes, and rain.
What a way to celebrate a birthday!


I grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons. My brother and my dad and I would gather around the TV to watch Captain Caveman, Grape Ape, or Japper Jaws as soon as we were awake. (ah, those were the days) Commercial breaks also included Schoolhouse Rock. I loved Schoolhouse Rock!


I learned many things from the Schoolhouse - nouns, exclamations, adverbs, and I can't forget Conjunction Junction! I explored the planets with Janet, shopped with the Lolly's for adverbs, and delighted in seeing the nervous system in animation. l


My favorite clips, as you might have guessed, were those focused upon American history. I sat with the Bill on Capitol Hill, looked for elbow room, said "No more king" with the colonists, celebrated lovely lady liberty with her book of recipes, and delighted in the discoveries revealed by Mother Necessity.

I learned so much from Schoolhouse Rock and loved learning while watching. And now, the Diva enjoys the collection of clips on DVD. It might not surprise you that her favorite song was "Lovely Lady Liberty," until she figured out that she knew how to count by 3's because "3 is a magic number." And she surprised even me when she walked around singing the "preamble."


When I was a junior in high school we had to memorize the Preamble. Well, some people did. I hazard to guess that most of us remembered it from Schoolhouse Rock - I know I did.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

That's exactly how I learned it! It came in handy at Bar Trivia just last night - I was the only person who could recite it all correctly!

I missed out on that show because we didn't own a TEEVEE. My dad was stupid about that.

Bre - It is amazing how those clips come in handy!

Doozie - It is never too late. They are CD and DVD. Your son will love them.

Matt - That is assuming a Bill gets passed. The Schoolhouse never mentioned "pork!"

7Seas - That has to be one of the most memorable songs. I bet you were a wiz when it came to conjunctions!
