This morning I opened my Reader to find that one of my favorite men in all of blog land had been hurt in an accident on Friday morning in Australia.  I immediately started wondering how I could help; what I could do from way over here to make a difference.

The world of blogs is an interesting place.  I have never met any of you and yet, I care.  I want to help, to send care packages, to have a cup of coffee.

Hey tE ,it is a funny(or not so funny) thing that we can care about someone we have never met so much...my first thought was 'what can i do to help?' will he have anyone to look after him when he gets out? and all of that.
Some people just touch us deeply, and he is one of them(its also a virgo - scorpio thing LOL).

You're quite right. Blogs become a bit of a community. I find comments from bloggers that read me on others blogs and I start reading blogs from the comments I find on bloggers that I read. (I think that's a sentence.)

I may read too many blogs, but I think you can get a very good sense of what people are and where people are in their lives from what and how they are writing. You can sense when they're happy or sad or worried. You invest emotionally in them and hope things turn out ok or feel good that they are feeling good.

Hope your time zone challenged friend gets well soon.

It's funny because I have both cared about other bloggers and been cared about by other bloggers. Very strange thing considering most of us have never met. And yet, like you said, we care. How does that work?

A year ago this past November or December, I stumbled upon a blog that became at the top of my list of my favorites. Read this guy's stuff FAITHFULLY! First thing, every day. Comments began to roll from me to him, then, him to me. Then e-mails as we communicated about lots of other things too. One day this past November, I got an e-mail that said it was from him but upon opening, I found it was written on his e-mail account by his sister, telling me her brother had died suddenly the day before of a massive heart attack. I still have all three of his blogs showing on my "Favorites" list although none of them have anything in them now. I can't bring myself to remove his blogs from my favorites list because to me, to do that, would make me feel like he never existed. Keep in mind, I never met the man, never even spoke with him on the phone - strictly blog and e-mail communications -but I felt like I had come to know him almost as well as some of my family, many of my closest friends. His sister and widow are now trying to figure out a way to set up a "memorial" type blog in which they will post many of his best writings and I will put that up on my favorites list when they do that too!
Hope your friend comes through everything ok!

I think when you learn the details about someone's life (where he goes for brunch, what he does on his dates, how he feels about his puppy, and so on), you naturally develop an affinity for the person. There are certain bloggers I feel I know better than some of my real-life friends.

Enigma - It is funny how that works. I read somewhere that Virgos are the "mother of the world." Sometimes I believe it!

Dave - He is doing better, thanks! Reading each post does give a snap shot of the other person. It is probably like pen pal letters from the past.

Kapgar - I wish that I could figure out how it works. I suppose people just connect - through words and ideas. Then we start to....care, whether we realize it or not.

Scotty - He is much better today but still not 100%. it was a bad accident.

Jeni - I remember reading about his death. It amazes me that we can touch one another's lives so much through a blog on the internet... but we can and we do.

Kenneth - I can see that. A post can express so much actually - and people do express much more than they might ever tell another person. We open our hearts to share and to receive. It is an interesting world.

We are such a unique community - us bloggers. Often we never meet, see each other, hell even know the real names of the lives we peek in to, the people we connect to in ways never experienced before.

If I am ever in your area, or if you are ever in mine I'd love to have coffee :)

Carrie - That would be great!

Scorpy - Just so glad that you are okay!
