Walking Rewards

At the end of March, the Diva started walking.  This is not to say that she didn't walk before, as she did.  It is more to say that we started counting our steps and walking with purpose.

Our objective was to walk 150 miles between 31 March and 30 May.

In order to meet this goal, we walked in rain and wind.  We took the long way rather than opting for the short cut.  A few days we took a trip "just to get in a few miles."  By the end, I was resorting to bribery, dangling a treat of sorts at the end of a few mile walk.

We talked a lot, laughed even more, and had a wonderful time attempting to reach our goal.  We even experience the unexpected.

Memorial day was the last Monday of our walkers effort.  I told the Diva that there was a great frozen custard place that we had to try.  We strapped on our pedometers and off we went.  3.5 miles later, we enjoyed a wonderful treat of chocolate frozen custard.  It was sensational and quite the reward for our efforts.

In an attempt to get in another mile (because 7 was just not enough for me I guess) I suggested that we venture down a paved public path we had crossed on our way to the custard shop.  The Diva complained a little until she saw what lay ahead of us on the path - Viva Vienna!

Completely without thought and/or knowledge, I had suggested the we turn down the path that cut right through the middle of the town's annual celebration.  People were everywhere.  Kids of all ages swarmed over the grass and stood in line to spend a few minutes screaming and laughing while becoming dizzy.  Within minutes, the Diva was one of those kids.  (She is already planning our trip to Viva Vienna next year).  She laughed and screamed and threw her hands in the air as she spun around at great heights.  I am happy to report that the custard did not reappear!

7.5 miles later,(round trip) we arrived at home to try the pool and relax through the rest of the holiday.

Walking is something the Diva and I do all, the, time.  We spend time on our feet enjoying one another's company or silence.  We play games, sing songs, or enjoy the nature and animals through which we pass.

Sometimes we even have an adventure!

By 30 May, The Diva had recorded 152 miles.  She had accomplished our goal plus a few additional miles (and probably a few we didn't count).  She mentioned that a boy suggested that his friend walked 200 miles!  And that there were kids recording the steps that they took in their own homes.  We were amazed at the 200 miles and I intentionally did not allow her to count anything that wasn't really walking.  We decided that she probably would not receive recognition again this year from the school, BUT we were so proud of ourselves for reaching our own goal!

Moments ago I received word that the Diva will receive acknowledgement of her efforts.  She is going to be thrilled - and Shhh, I am not going to tell her!  Something's are that much sweeter when they are unexpected!  (it is also nice that she is proud of achieving her own goals without needing school recognition.

But... Yea Diva!

Congratulations.

Next time, have her jump on a trampoline for a few hours to beef up that step count. ;)
